Car rental in Mauritius

140 listings in the survey, from the nearest to the farthest from the airport. Independent and unofficial directory.

What to know before you call

Renting a car is the most practical way to see Mauritius: buses are cheap but slow, and many beaches, viewpoints and the Black River Gorges are far from any stop. The rental desks below range from one-person local agencies to counters of international brands. Local agencies are often more flexible on delivery to a hotel and on the length of hire, while the big names give you a familiar booking process from abroad.

Whoever you choose, ask in writing for the total price including taxes, the excess on the insurance, the security deposit, the fuel policy and any charge for delivery or late return. Keep the confirmation. Driving is on the left and the main roads are good, but towns are busy at rush hour, so a compact car is easier to park in coastal villages.

The survey holds 140 entries on this page, spread over 43 towns, with the most in Plaine Magnien, Port Louis, Grand Baie. 101 of them show a phone number and 119 a website, so the others are best checked on a map or by asking around before you drive there.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an international driving licence in Mauritius?

Rules differ by country of issue and by rental desk. Ask the business before you travel which licences it accepts and whether a translation is required.

Is the insurance included in the rental price?

It depends on the business. Ask which cover is included, the amount of the excess and the size of the security deposit before you book.
