Every coast of Mauritius has its own rhythm, and a car is the best way to link them. The north offers the beaches and bays around Grand Baie, the west has the sunsets of Flic en Flac and the road to Le Morne, the east keeps long quiet beaches around Belle Mare and the south-west opens onto Chamarel and the Black River Gorges. The guides below give a day plan for each, with driving times, stops and the type of vehicle that suits the road. Another guide explains how to approach Port Louis by car, where traffic and parking need more preparation. Distances are estimates: check the route in a navigation app before leaving and start early in high season, because parking at the most popular viewpoints and beaches fills up before midday.
